The Tower of London has claims to be England’s greatest building 
but its bloody history may put off more sensitive souls.  
The ancient church of All Hallows by the Tower provides gentler 
spiritual relief. (At least now there are no local headless bodies
to be buried in the churchyard.)
It dates back to the 7th century when the Saxon church was connected
with the abbey of Barking, as Saxon bricks in an interior arch 
testify - built on a site containing ashes from Boadicea’s sack 
of London. The church escaped the Great Fire (viewed from its recent
tower of 1659 by Pepys) but was less fortunate from the bombing 
during the Blitz. The interior was gutted and only the tower 
survived intact.
All has been restored postwar with internal galleries and concrete 
roof: while a roman pavement leads into the 14th century barrel - 
vaulted crypt. 
The font cover of 1682 is a notable feature: limewood with exquisit
e carving of cherubs and a dove.
